The psychological effects slavery had on Africans minds and ways of thinking
The psychological effect of slavery has, taken a great toll on the minds of the African American people .It has degraded them greatly over the past few years. Slavery made African Americans have a fixed mindset on how they act and talk. There are many different types of psychological effects that took effect on the African people. These effects have messed with them for many years and have done great amounts of damage to there minds and there ways of thinking. Some of these effects still effect us today in some type of way.
One of these psychological effects is sub-conscious inferiority complex. Inferiority complex is lack of self worth. I know they have this because, in an article it says "Many African Americans suffer from a sub-conscious inferiority complex, witch can be in part attributed to forced disconnection from their source of self concept and identity." We also suffered from self loathing and depression. I know this because in the article it says "Being forced to work without compensation dragged the black further into psychological quagmire of self loathing and depression"
Slavery has affected the mind of Africans for years. There were many different types of psychological disorders. The slaves suffered from psychological trauma. They also suffered from emotional trauma. Slave owners made there slaves believe every thing black was bad. It caused self hatred of themselves. The slave owners also told them every thing white was good no matter what. I know this because in because in an article it says "resulted in often times self hatred because blacks were taught every thing black was bad and every thing white was good." Slave owners multiple things to make Africans think less of themselves. Some of these things were calling them the "N-word". They also humiliated them in front of the other Africans and used them as examples.
Slave owners hate there own skin color, texture of there hair, and physical features. I know this because in an article it says "Some blacks learned to hate there skin color, physical features, and textures of there hair." This caused many problems for the African American people. One of the other psychological effects is how stereotypes influence our thinking. Some of these stereotypes is how black peoples favorite food is fried chicken. This stereotype came from the south because fried chicken was cheap so they would feed it to the slaves. I know that stereotypes influence our thinking because in the article it says " Negative stereotypes influence our thinking. It can also be understood in terms of the effects of premature cognitive commitments.''
Slave owners stripped black men and women of their pride. They did this by degrading them and treating them like animals. The slave owners also brain washed the slaves by telling them the same thing multiple times. The slaves would then begin to believe what they were told since they heard it every day. This effected there minds in many ways depending on what they were told.
The Africans were also forced to fight and kill each other. The slave owners did this for there entertainment. They called it mandingo fighting. The slave owner would pick his toughest slave and put him up against another slave. Mandingo fighting was like human cock fighting and made the Africans feel guilty when they killed or severally beaten another person. It made them feel like animals or savages. African women were sexually abused and it lowered there self esteem. They were treated like that almost every day.
Slavery also weekend the minds of black people. It made them feel worthless and it made them think they were supposed to be treated horribly. The slave owners made them think slavery was good for them. Many Africans were born into slavery. They believed every thing they were told by the slave owners because they did not know any better. Slavery was a dark and disturbing part of Americas history and that is why it will never be forgotten.
